It’s easy to think, with the success of British Cycling on the track and Team Sky / Ineos in the World Tour, that cycling in Britain takes care of itself. But the production line that picks up talent in from the playground and deposits it to the start line of major international races is only made possible by an army of volunteers at grass roots level.
Okay, we’re not saying that by volunteering for Essex Roads you’ll discover the next Mark Cavendish, but you will find an aspect of cycling that is hugely rewarding and help secure that enjoyment for the next generation.
And there’s plenty for you to get involved with. Putting signs out for a road race or TT; serving cake; marshalling; helping with cake; joining the committee and helping shape your club. And did we mention cake?
So if you have time, no matter how much, please consider giving some of it to your club.
